The bronze serpent — looking and living

The way you get well is by looking, not by trying.

That is hard for anyone in your generation to hear. You have been trained to fix. When something is wrong, you read more articles, listen to more podcasts, take a course, optimize a routine, work the problem.

Numbers 21 says no. The Israelites couldn’t fix the venom. They couldn’t out-strategize the snakes. They looked at the bronze serpent and lived.

Christ is the bronze serpent. The fix is not yours to engineer. He has already been lifted up. Your job is to look at Him.

This applies to specific things. Anxiety that won’t quit. Shame from something you did. A pattern of sin you keep promising to fix. A version of yourself you keep trying to repair. Stop trying to cure yourself. Look at Christ. Receive the healing.

One small thing today: in a moment when something in you is spiraling — anxiety, shame, comparison, self-condemnation — look. Picture the cross. Say out loud, Jesus is lifted up. The venom has lost its power. Then go on with the day.
