Through the lens of Man

The bronze serpent — looking and living

The hardest spiritual lesson for a man is that the cure is by gaze, not by effort.

Most men I know are trying to fix themselves. The sin pattern they want to break. The marriage they want to save. The depression they want to outrun. The shame they want to outwork. We are trained to use force on our problems.

Numbers 21 says no. The Israelites had snake venom in their blood. No amount of effort was going to remove it. They had to look — at a bronze serpent that, by itself, was just metal — and trust that the Father healed.

Christ on the cross is the same. You cannot effort your way out of sin. You cannot effort your way into righteousness. You look at Him. He does the healing.

This does not mean passivity. It means the cure starts with the gaze. Effort comes after. The bronze serpent first. Then the journey continues.

One small thing today: in a place where you have been trying to outwork your own sin, stop. Look at Christ. Believe the venom has been answered. Then keep walking.
