The new tablets — mercy, glory, the name

The Father describes His mercy as maintained to a thousand generations. That is one of the most stunning sentences in the Old Testament.

Mercy is not just a mood He is in. It is a generational current. What He extends to you flows downstream — to your kids, your grandkids, your great-great-grandchildren and beyond.

Marriages get to participate in this. The mercy you extend in your marriage echoes for generations. The forgiveness you offer your spouse is the kind your kids will absorb and pass on. The patience you practice with each other is the patience your grandkids will know. The grudges you nurse will also echo. So will the mercies.

Most marriages can name the wounds that came down to them from their parents and grandparents. Fewer can name the mercies that came down. The Father is in the business of starting new generational currents.

One small thing this week: name one mercy you and your spouse have practiced toward each other recently. Talk about how it might echo into your kids, your friendships, your grandkids. The Father maintains love to a thousand generations. So do you, when you choose mercy in your home.
