The covenant ceremony — blood and vision

Communion is older than you think.

The Christian church has been celebrating the Eucharist for two thousand years. The Jewish people had been keeping Passover for fifteen hundred years before that. And before Passover, in Exodus 24, seventy elders climbed a mountain, saw God, and ate and drank in His presence. The Father has been throwing dinners since the mountain.

You are at an age where it can feel embarrassing to take communion seriously. It feels like a religious ritual you do because the church does it. Your friends might roll their eyes. The cracker is small. The cup is plastic. The whole thing can feel like theater.

It is not. You are sitting at the same table the elders sat at on Sinai. You are eating the same meal Jesus shared with His disciples. The covenant is being remembered. Heaven is touching earth in your mouth.

One small thing today: the next time you take communion — at church, in your kitchen, alone or together — take it seriously. Don’t rush. Remember Sinai. Remember the upper room. The Father has been throwing dinners. You are at His table.
