Through the lens of Woman

The most mistranslated phrase in Genesis 2 might be helper corresponding to him (Gen 2:18).

In English, helper sounds like an assistant. Subordinate. The one who fetches. But the Hebrew word is ezer — and that same word is used almost everywhere else in Scripture to describe God himself as Israel’s helper. Ezer is not a junior partner term. It is a strong rescue term. The kind of help you cry out for when you are in over your head.

And kenegdo — corresponding to him — means face-to-face. Equal-and-opposite. Not behind. Not below. Across.

Then look at what happens next. The text says God built the woman from the man’s side (Gen 2:22). Built — banah — the same verb later used for building cities, building tabernacles, building temples. Eve is not crafted from a leftover. She is built like a temple from what was closest to the man’s heart.

If you have been handed a version of faith that treats you as backup, as the support role, as the quiet one whose job is to make space for someone else’s calling — Genesis is not that story. The Hebrew won’t let it be.

One small thing today: name one place where you’ve been operating as a helpmeet — small, deferential, behind — when you were actually called to be an ezer — strong, face-to-face, present. Step into that place this week with the strength you were built with.
