Through the lens of Young married

The binding of Isaac

There is a sentence in Genesis 22 that should land in any marriage with kids — and even in marriages without them, where you have poured your hearts into something else.

Your son, your only son, whom you love.

The thing you most love can become the thing that quietly takes the throne in your home. A child. A career. A house. A reputation. A vision for what your family is supposed to be. None of these are bad. All of them can become idols if you stop holding them open-handedly.

The binding of Isaac is not a story about God wanting your child. It is a story about the Father making sure that the gift didn’t quietly become the god. Abraham passes the test, gets Isaac back, and now holds him as a gift, not an idol.

One small thing this week: name one good thing in your home that has been quietly creeping into the throne. Talk about it together. Hold it open in front of the Father — this is yours, not ours. See if the gift comes back to you with cleaner air around it.
